Police: Suicidal driver caused fatal crash in Surprise

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a 19-year-old man has been arrested and accused of intentionally causing a four-vehicle accident in Surprise that left one person dead and three others injured.

Surprise police say Keith Johnson was released from a hospital Wednesday afternoon and booked into a jail in downtown Phoenix on suspicion of one count of second-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

They say Johnson intentionally caused the collision in an alleged attempt to take his own life.

It wasn't immediately clear if the Surprise resident has a lawyer yet.

Police say the drivers of all four vehicles were transported to hospitals after the accident that occurred about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

They say 46-year-old Margie Yaw-Mehlos of Surprise was declared dead on arrival at a Phoenix-area hospital.
