Sun City seniors explore the benefits of speed dating

Speed dating took on a whole new meaning in Sun City this weekend.
“I thought it was a blast, we had a great time,” said Speed-Dater Laura Donovan.
“Today was the one-on-one experience… it was a lot more fun,” said Speed-Dater Walter Setzke.
Activities Director at the Banner Olive Branch Senior Center, Kelsey Kelley, came up with the idea after watching a documentary.
“We actually have a movie premier called the Age of Love,” said Kelly. “It was a documentary about senior speed dating.” “We decided to have our own speed dating event since we are all about socialization, getting people to know one another and communication.
Kelley says at this age, many people don't show an interest in relationships, but she knows they are key to leading happy healthy lives.
“It’s important for socialization, keeping them healthy [and] happy in the community. A lot of seniors don’t have that opportunity and that’s what we were looking to give them.”
“I’ve been coming here for a year now. It’s kind of weird in Sun City where you can see people you can see their face, but you never really get to meet them until they sit down next to you and today was the day you really got to sit down and meet these people.”
Those who participated appreciated the opportunity to get to know old friends better and make new ones...and look forward to another round of speed dating.
“I would do it again, yeah, because I laughed and had a great time,” says Donovan.
The Olive Branch Senior Center plans to hold more activities like this one in the near future.
