Phoenix police: Woman fatally shot after firing at officers

Phoenix police say a rifle-wielding woman shot at officers who then returned fire, fatally wounding the woman.

Sgt. Vince Lewis says no officers were injured in the incident, which occurred Wednesday night as three officers and a sergeant responded to a report of shots fired. Police have identified Alexis Stinson as the suspect.

The incident occurred near North 47th Avenue and West Union Hills Drive. Bullet holes mark the house where the 44-year-old had her ultimately deadly confrontation with Phoenix Police. One of the bullets in the shooting flew across the street into the home of Mike Sandoval. Sandoval's wife is pregnant.

"It is just the thing about bullets, they don't care where they are going," said Sandoval, whose wife saw a little white puff in the air, as the bullet tore through the drywall. Sandoval's wife ran to the rear of the home, as police moved in.

Stinson, according to police, shot at family members in her home before officers arrived, but no one was hurt.
