Sweet potato pie flies off the shelves at Walmart
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - This holiday season there's quite a bit of buzz surrounding a holiday pie. Singer Patti LaBelle's Sweet Potato Pie is sold exclusively at WalMarts but the giant retailer can't seem to keep them in stock.
You could say her pies have gone viral, but FOX 10 was able to get the last one at a store in north Phoenix.
Patti Labelle, she's had some best sellers during her music career, and her sweet potato pies were a good seller at Walmart. Until last month when this fan, James Wright Chanel reviewed the pie on YouTube.
"We sold one pie per second for 72 hours straight that first weekend of the viral YouTube video," said a spokesperson with WalMart.
Which is why the pie which costs $3.48 is hard to find. You'll find some sellers on eBay selling the pies for up to $25 each.
"We're doing everything we can to get the pies from the distribution center to our stores as quickly as possible, and meet that great demand," said the WalMart spokesperson.
Wright's reaction was over the top, so some FOX 10 employees sampled the famous pie.
"It really sticks to your teeth in a good way."
"I don't know if it's a little too sweet, or too many spices, it's just a little weird."
The best way to get your hands on one of the pies is to go to your local WalMart's Facebook page and check to see if they've gotten a shipment. Others say you should call the store and confirm they have them before going.
