Teen shot outside of Tempe Burger King

Tempe Police are investigating a bizarre shooting outside of a fast food restaurant. A teenager claims he found a gun and then accidentally shot himself.

The teen is ok, and police say he claimed to have shot himself in the foot, and now they're trying to verify his story.

The call came in from the Burger King at Priest and Broadway around 4:45 p.m. after the teen went inside the restaurant looking for help.

The 15-year-old told dispatchers he found the gun across the street from the Burger King and accidentally pulled the trigger.

Police say they cannot find the gun, even after searching under plants and the parking lot.

"We're trying to look for other ways to see if that is in fact how it happened, we do not want to have a gun sitting out for someone else to find, so right now there is a search going on for the weapon," said Officer Naomi Galbraith.

Authorities say witnesses at a neighboring business heard the gunshot and some reported seeing two teens in the parking lot.

Tempe Police say they still have not located any weapon.

The teen victim was taken to an area hospital with non life threatening injuries.
