Twin toddlers hospitalized following near drowning incident

Two-year-old twins were rushed to an area hospital after slipping into their backyard hot tub.

Just after 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, Tempe police and firefighters arrived at the neighborhood near Priest Drive and Warner Road in response to a drowning call involving the twins.

Neighbors tell us many people in the area have pools and hearing children were involved was heartbreaking.

"It's sad and not good information," said Hkramchandra.

Madhuanandapu, another neighbor, added, "I was praying to the God that nothing happens to them."

Tempe police say the twins were found in the backyard hot tub, which was above ground with no barrier.

"At this time, we believe the mother looked away for just a few seconds. That's when the toddlers were able to go into the hot tub," said Detective Lily Duran.

The children were rushed to Cardon Children's Medical Center for treatment. We're told the girl has been transferred to the intensive care unit and is breathing on her own. The boy was transferred to the ICU later in the day. Both children remain in critical condition.

"We ask that the community keep these little ones and their family in their thoughts in prayers," said Duran.

UPDATE: On August 18th, Duran stated, "It is with a very heavy heart that we inform the community that 2 year old twin boy has passed away. This is a terrible tragedy and we are very saddened by the news. At this time, we know that sister's health is improving but has a long road of recovery. We thank the community for their support and ask that they continue to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers and give them privacy in this difficult moment."
