Two Cottonwood officers hurt while arresting suspect

Cottonwood police say two officers suffered minor injuries while attempting to restrain a suspect under arrest for a misdemeanor crime.

Police say on Thursday night at 9 p.m., officers responded to an argument near a Circle K at Mingus and Main.

Officers began to take 19-year-old Michael Travis Walts into custody; the suspect had a misdemeanor warrant out for his arrest.

But they say Travis ran from police, and then resisted arrest once they caught up with him.

One officer suffered abrasions to his wrist, elbow and knee, while a second officer sustained a knee injury, according to police. They say Walts even attempted to escape a second time.

Walts was booked at the Yavapai County Jail, where he was booked on charges of aggravated assault on two police officers, attempted escape, resisting arrest, and criminal damage, among other charges.

Both officers were treated and released by medics with the Cottonwood Fire Department.
