PHOENIX (AP) -- Police say one person is in custody after a fatal car crash in north Phoenix.

Phoenix police say the collision occurred at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday on Union Hills Drive at 41st Avenue and involved a full-size truck and a sports car.

"The suspect's vehicle was traveling eastbound on Union Hills and failed to yield while turning left at 41st Ave. This vehicle collided with a second vehicle that was traveling westbound on Union Hills. The momentum of the accident caused the victim's vehicles to leave the roadway and collided with a pole just west," explained Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump.

Phoenix Fire Department officials say the driver of the car had to be extricated. 21-year-old Timothy Lewis was in serious condition when paramedics took him to a hospital where he later passed away.

The driver of the truck was identified as 36-year-old James Coughenour.

"Coughenour was evaluated by detectives and impairment is believed to be a factor. He was booked for manslaughter," stated Crump.
