Phoenix police have identified the man who was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting at the Cactus Park precinct on Saturday morning.

The incident happened shortly after 11:30 a.m., and involved a screaming suspect who threw a rock at a police officer's vehicle. The man has been identified as 41-year-old Lonnie Niesen. When officers made contact with the suspect, the violence escalated and the suspect then threw a brick or rocks through the window of the Cactus Park precinct, according to police.

One of the windows of the precinct was shattered from the brick-throwing incident. Officers say the suspect picked up another brick and refused to drop it, despite officers' commands. The suspect threw it at an officer, and hit the officer in the hand. The officer opened fire, ultimately killing the suspect.

A spokesperson for Phoenix police says no officers were injured in the shooting. Family members say the suspect had been making suicidal statements, and had recently stolen a gun which he then returned.

Niesen died on the scene. The two officers involved in this shooting are a 42-year-old male police sergeant, and a 46-year-old male police officer; both have been with Phoenix police for nearly 20 years. Both will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard practice in these cases.
