UPS driver shares special bond with autistic teen

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - It's a typical afternoon for UPS driver Michael Day as he delivers packages in this Phoenix neighborhood, but for 14-year-old Asher, it's the best part of his day.

"It's a big one, Asher, I'm telling you," Day said.

Every day for the last eight years, Mike's morning has started with a phone call from Asher, who is autistic.

"He asks how many packages there are, what's in it and stuff and I just tell him you know I have one package and he'll have to find out what's in it," Day said.

If there is a package for Asher, sometimes Mike stays a little longer.

"Whenever Mike comes by and I have food, I ask him to come in and fix a plate," Asher said.

If there's no package for Mike to deliver, he still makes an effort to swing by.

Mike says he doesn't mind the early-morning phone calls or stopping by to see Asher.

"I just try to put myself in his shoes and his family's shoes and all of that and just say hey you know it's not really that big of a deal to take a phone call or do a little bit of extra, so why not do it," he said.

Asher's family says they appreciate Mike's kindness.
