Valley gun shop raffles rifle for firefighters

A Valley gun shop is raffling off a lot of firepower to help a couple of first responders in the biggest fight of their lives. Two Goodyear firefighters are battling cancer, and a semi-automatic rifle could help them in a big way.

When you think of rifles, most people think of money or cars as the grand prize, but AZ Firearms in Avondale is raffling off an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle worth more than $1,000.

Gilbert Aguirre was diagnosed with leukemia last year, although his prognosis is good, he continues to struggle financially. At the same time, his coworker at the Goodyear Fire Department Austin Peck is battling a rare form of cancer.

"He also got diagnosed with cancer; his family is going through a lot of struggles right now. As well the only place he can get treatment is in San Diego," said Gilbert Aguirre.

The high-powered rifle won't cure their cancers, but it could help them out in a big way. The shop is hoping to raise tens of thousands of dollars for the firefighters.

This particular type rifle being raffled recently sold for $1,400 and the raffle tickets are $10 a piece.

The raffle is open to anyone 18-years-old or over, the winner must also meet requirements as with any gun sales. The owner says they will make sure the grand prize does not end up in the wrong hands.

"Whoever wins it will go through a background check, and we'll make sure whoever it is is perfectly legal to own it," said Cheryl Todd.

Aguirre says the community's support will go a long way. Not just for him and his own family, but for his fellow firefighter.

"Anybody that knows Austin knows that he is a fighter, so he's got this, he will beat it," said Gilbert Aguirre.

The drawing for the raffle takes place on April 16. The shop did a similar raffle last year to raise money for an injured Avondale Police officer. That event raised $13,000.
