Original Story (12/12)

A Valley man accused of beating up his girlfriend's three-year-old girl has made his first appearance in court.

According to family members, the girl might not make it, following what police said was child abuse by the mother's boyfriend.

"My other daughter called me and told me that Morgan Koepp got beat up," said Tim Williams.

It's the news that no grandparent wants to get, and Williams raced to Phoenix Children's Hospital from his home in Pinetop, after he found out his granddaughter, Morgan, was in the hospital.

"She had cardiac arrest," said Williams. "They had to bring her back. She went into another cardiac arrest. They had to put a machine on her to keep her alive."

Police paperwork indicates that Morgan was abused, allegedly by 33-year-old Sidney Landers. Landers was booked yesterday on alleged child abuse charges, and has since made his first court appearance.

Now, Morgan is fighting for her life, having suffered multiple bruises and broken ribs, and now an infection.

"It's a necrotizing soft tissue infection that opened up when she got hit or punched or whatever she did, and it spread throughout her body," said Williams.

Now, the stunned family can only sit, and wait and hope for the best.

"Any and all prayers by anybody," said Williams, crying. "I don't think someone that has a soul or cares about kids could do this."

according to police, Landers said he was "frustrated" while changing Morgan when he was watching her on Sunday. Landers reportedly told police he held his hand over Morgan's mouth and used force while changing her, but did not mean to cause the injuries.

As of Tuesday night, it is unknown if Morgan is going to pull through.
