Valley Metro seeks public input on final Tempe Streetcar design

TEMPE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Valley Metro will hold a community meeting tonight at the Tempe Transportation Center to give the public an opportunity to weigh in on design concepts, public art projects, and construction schedules for the future streetcar.

Expected to be completed in 2020, the streetcar will run on a three-mile route with 14 stops around downtown Tempe. Valley Metro said it's meant to connect Tempe riders to neighborhoods, major business centers and regional event spaces.

The project is expected to cost about $186 million. So far, the Trump administration has approved $50 million.

Valley Metro is already in their first phase of construction. Workers have been relocating utilities to make way for the track. The plan is to do most of the work during the summer months when Tempe isn't as busy

Valley Metro said this project is different than the light rail, because the cars themselves are much smaller, they aren't linked together, and they move much slower.
