Valley non-profit holds blood drive in support of law enforcement
PHOENIX (FOX 10) - Cathy Hobbs came to donate blood for a good reason -- her late husband, John.
"John was a detective for Phoenix Police Department," she said. "He was killed March 3, 2014."
Det. John Hobbs was shot and killed as he and other members of the fugitive apprehension team attempted to serve a felony warrant on a man who had recently been released from prison.
"John was shot... it was all emergency, the blood donations are huge," she said. 'I can't even imagine how many pints they went through trying to save his life."
Marie Dryer Kircher, president of C.O.P.S., or Concerns of Police Survivors, shares a similar story and the desire to help.
"I was a sergeant with Arizona DPS on July 3, 1993," she said. "Reserve Sgt. Mark Dryer, my former husband, was struck and killed on I-10 by a driver under the influence of drugs and alcohol."
Today's Blue Blood Drive is part of a national movement.
"This is a calling for them and we are there to help people in any way we can, so yes, we run to danger to help out," she said.
Both women encourage anyone who can help to do so because they say a donation will help law enforcement, but it will also help save other lives.
"Little things like this, it's something that you can do for the law enforcement community," Hobbs said.
