Valley teen killed in crash remembered

AVONDALE, Ariz. (KSAZ) -- A Valley family is getting ready to celebrate the life of their daughter and sister, who was killed in a crash in Avondale last week.

The suspect was arrested, but was just released from jail, pending the outcome of a blood alcohol test.

Video of the deadly crash, which happened near Osborn and Dysart Roads, are being seen for the first time. The video was taken by a nearby driver's dash cam. In the video, threes cars were involved in the crash, one of which went up in flames. Right after the crash, witnesses ran toward the crash to help get those inside the vehicle out.

Sadly, one woman didn't make it. That teen was 17-year-old Amanda Moreno, a senior at Agua Fria High School. Moreno's sister, Whitney Meadows, said she loved studying journalism and criminal justice.

"We're only four years apart," said Whitney. "She was my best friend. She is my best friend."

Police say the driver, identified as 54-year-old Tollie Matthews, was arrested after telling various stories to police, including falling asleep at the wheel. He eventually admitted to taking oxycodones prior to driving, after having an argument with his wife.

Meanwhile, the family is devastated. They say their daughter, sister and friend of many was one of a kind.

"We love her very much and miss her, and it still doesn't seem real," said Moreno's mother, Shannon Meadows. "Doesn't seem real at all."

Matthews was reportedly released 18 hours ago, with an ankle monitor, waiting on the blood test results before he can be officially charged.
