Valley youth center aims to change the lives of the homeless

Behind the doors of Tumbleweed's new Phoenix Youth Resource Center you'll find a place where lives begin to drastically change.

"We go out five nights a week under bridges, parks, river bottoms, we know where to go by now, so we've built enough of a relationship that people feel comfortable coming into a facility like this," Ken Lynch said.

In his years working with Tumbleweed, Ken Lynch has seen the need grow. The organization's dozen valley locations help thousands of homeless youth, with all of them ranging in age from 12 to 25.

Now, they have this new facility near 24th Street and Van Buren which provides a bigger space for their staff in hopes of making a bigger difference in the young homeless community.

"Here, they can find food, they have a chance to wash up, they can get their clothes done, they can rest a little bit and get off the street and they meet our case management staff and start to get introduced to some of our other services that we have here," Lynch said.

But the front needs some work. There's six empty 11-by-7-foot panels that Ken says are begging for a community project to brighten things up.

"We're looking for up-and-coming artists with a real passion for creativity who will volunteer to take these blank spaces and turn them into inspirational art, so that our young people, when they see this building, are going to get the message that today, you're life is going to get better," he said.

It's a message that Ken says anyone walking through these doors will appreciate and the proof seen in the transformations that he sees everyday.
