Visitors to Arizona shocked by winter weather

SHOW LOW, Ariz. (FOX 10) -- As a winter storm brought record snowfall to parts of Northern Arizona, some travelers in Show Low had to wait it out until crews could clear the roads and make them safe.

Luke Murray, who is from South Africa, had been on the road from Georgia to Wisconsin to Indianapolis with his colleagues. They thought they found the desert.

"Now, we're stuck in the -- where are we? Somewhere in Arizona!" said Murray. "Show Low, Arizona."

Visitors from the Valley didn't see the storm coming either.

"Safeway was packed, like, there was no spots," said Phillip Huibregtse, who was trying to get back to Phoenix. "Everyone was stocking up for food, and we just thought like, hey no big deal. They're probably just overdoing it like everyone else. Now we see the snow, and we're, like, they're not as crazy as we thought they were."

Two feet of snow later, many travelers are trapped in Show Low's winter wonderland.

"The roads were closed, so we just decided to stay," said Jesse Valencia, who was trying to get back to Phoenix. "We're probably gonna have to stay tonight too."

However, with ADOT announcing the reopening of some highways, just proceed with caution.

"We're just wanna go and see for ourselves how bad it is out there," said Murray. "We're not thinking."
