SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Today, the men and women in blue are making sure more than 1,00 students head back to school looking their best.
Just ask Officer Lines.
"Just seeing them come and be able to get all the new school supplies and clothes before starting out the new year, it's really fun and exciting," Scottsdale Police Officer Devon Lines said.
And the officers aren't the only ones excited.
"What kind of things make you excited to go back to school?" I asked.
"The backpacks and the school supplies," Melanie Reyes said.
The Police Officers of Scottsdale Association is proud to sponsor "Covering the Bases," which is the annual back-to-school event where dozens of volunteers hand out shoes, backpacks, school supplies, and provide medical and dental exams.
"As the kids come in the door, they see the rows and rows of shoes and they know that they get to pick out whichever pair they want, and it's a big relief for the parents too because they're not worried about checking the price tag," Darlene Cook said.
It's a huge relief indeed as back-to-school supplies can add up fast.
"I appreciate it very much, thank you so much for all these donations," Melanie Reyes' mother said. "We're so grateful and thankful for all of this."
The goal is to not only make sure that students look good and feel great before heading back to the classroom, but also to continue to build a relationship between law enforcement and the community.
"You know, a lot of times we're there on their worst days, so being able to bring them a good day and interact with them in a positive light is a lot of fun," Officer Lines said.
