Warning system exists in Oak Creek Canyon to alert people to flash flooding

A tragedy that killed 9 people, and a possible 10th near Payson over the weekend had many asking whether there is any thing that can be done, to give people warning of similar disasters.

Some communities do have siren warning systems that are similar to tornado warnings used in the Midwest. In the Oak Creek Canyon area, nine sirens have been placed to warn people of possible flooding or wildfire. The system, which was installed in 2004, was activated during the Slide Dire in 2014.

Sedona Fire District also used it during a storm surge last summer, and local residents know to to tune into a certain radio station for more information.
