Woman arrested for manslaughter after deadly crash

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KSAZ) - A woman is behind bars after police say she hit and killed a man with her car in a gas station parking lot.

Phoenix Police officers responded to the crash near North 35th Avenue and West Glendale Avenue.

Offices say Shanika Bennett, 33, was driving northbound when she tried breaking to avoid hitting another vehicle, but was unable to stop due to mechanical issues with her vehicle. The vehicle ran off the roadway into a gas station parking lot.

Investigators say Sergio Grimaldo, 34, was walking out of the gas station into the parking when he was struck by Bennett's vehicle. He was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Bennett was found to be impaired and was arrested on one count of manslaughter.

Police are continuing to investigate.
