ANTHEM, Ariz. (KSAZ) -
It's the time of year when holiday packages start showing up on Valley doorsteps. Unfortunately, thieves could be waiting to walk away from them.
It happened in Anthem this week, and the package thief was caught in the act.
Motion detection cameras caught the suspect's car driving by, moments later the camera spots the car pulling up and a woman got out. It appears she is pretending to talk on her cellphone as she walks to the front door, picks up the package, and takes off. Her getaway driver was waiting inside the car.
When Alex Ristanovic noticed the package was missing, he started scanning through the video from his 14 surveillance cameras mounted around his anthem home.
"I do think they were driving around the neighborhood, looking for easy targes, packages that were sitting outside," said Alex Ristanovic.
Another angle with sound captured the woman walking right up to the front door, cellphone on her ear. She looks around, grabs the package, and takes off. If they thought they were getting a big pay day, they were wrong.
"It was just a bottle of fish oil and drapes for our living room. My wife said the thing better than them getting caught, is them opening the box and looking inside and going what the heck is this," said Ristanovic.
Risatnovic alerted his neighbors and turned the video over to police.
"While they are brazen I don't think this is a career criminal because I think they would have been smarter with how they did it. They would have looked up and saw the cameras; they would have looked at the sign that said surveillance on premises. I truly think that these are people who saw this as an easy opportunity," he said.
