Police: Pregnant woman dies after car crash in Phoenix

- Authorities say a pregnant woman was killed and a man injured after a crash on Sunday morning.

Thomas Road was shut down between 19th and 23rd Avenues for the investigation into the fatal collision around 5:30 a.m.  Police say the woman drove from the curb lane in an attempt to pass a truck and crashed into a metal structure that separates eastbound and westbound lanes of traffic.

A 23-year-old male passenger was hurt in the collision, but he is expected to survive.

According to Phoenix Fire crews, the female driver who was killed was seven months pregnant.  She has been identified as 38-year-old Anna Garcia. Despite the efforts of doctors, they were unable to save the baby boy.

"We were so happy. I was gonna make her a baby shower in February.. all the family was gonna get close," said Yzlia Billalobos, Garcia's mother-in-law. "She was just an amazing person."

Police say speed may have been a factor and the impact of the collision was so intense that engine from Garcia's vehicle was found several yards away -- in the middle of the road. Authorities are still trying to determine if anything else played a role in the crash.
