Wrong-way driving detection system to be installed over the weekend

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A system to stop wrong way crashes is getting installed this weekend.

The installation over the weekend is the first installation phase of ADOT's new, $3.7 million wrong way driver detection system. Over the weekend, Crews will be installing thermal cameras along a 15-mile stretch of the I-17, from Indian School Road to Loop 101.

Governor Doug Ducey ordered state agencies to take steps that include expediting the deployment of new technology aimed at curbing the problem, after a string of wrong-way crashes this year.

With these new system, if a wrong way driver is detected, it will send signals to state troopers, and will also flash signs to alert the driver to stop.

The message boards will also alert other drivers as well.

There are expected to be future restrictions on the I-17 along the 15 mile stretch, as the installation project continues over the next few months. ADOT is saying the system will be fully operational by next year.
