BLACK CANYON CITY, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Southbound Interstate 17 was closed at Black Canyon City for some time Tuesday, following a fatal wrong-way collision.
According to a statement released by the Department of Public Safety (DPS), troopers began to receive multiple reports of a wrong-way driver in a red SUV traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-17, near milepost 242.
The wrong-way car, according to reports, caused five to six collisions, one of which involved a motorcyclist, who has been identified as 50-year-old Cindy Meade. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Meade lived in Cave Creek, and according to those who knew her, was an avid biker.
The alleged wrong-way driver, identified as 76-year-old Darroll Roberts, has been arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular homicide. He has been booked into Yavapai County Jail.
The freeway's southbound lanes were closed for several hours.
