Young couple escapes fire, plans to go through with wedding

A FOX follow-up to a story involving an apartment fire that trapped two people in a bathroom: they were rescued by firefighters and now we're learning more about the struggling young couple, Brandon Uyehana and Shelbi Hickey.

"Everything is covered in black soot. If we weren't in that bathroom, the way we were, there was no way we could've made it," said Uyehana.

This Tempe couple walked into their apartment near Dorsey Lane and Apache Boulevard for the first time after the fire. They walked out grateful to be alive.

A 9-1-1 operator told them to barricade themselves in their bathroom as flames devoured their home. They didn't know how they would make it out.

"He told us to get into the bathroom and I was like, oh my goodness...," said Hickey. "We were both thinking, who's going to reach us first.. the fire or the fireman?"

The couple moved to Arizona a year ago from California for school. She's in a Master's program and he's in an engineering program at Arizona State University.

After surviving a devastating fire together, they have another life changing event ahead of them.

"We're getting married in about a week," said Uyehana. 'This is just really the start of our new lives together, building all over again."

As they shifted through the rubble, trying to salvage anything they could, they also discovered a silver lining.

"Kind of wondering why the timing worked out this way, but I guess we're just staring from scratch," said Hickey.

The couple plans to have a small wedding ceremony in Las Vegas. A family member set up a GoFundMe page for the couple to help them get through this difficult time.
