Avondale police: Officers shoot machete-wielding man

It was a wild and deadly scene in Avondale that started around 9:00 a.m. Thursday when police say a suspect attacked a city maintenance worker and stole his work truck.

A police pursuit began and it ended with one officer hit and the suspect shot to death.

"It was like bang bang.. 5, 6 shots and down he went."

Manuel Contreras says he saw Avondale police officers open fire on 43-year-old Jeremy Bustos, ending a dramatic police chase.

Police say Bustos stole a city maintenance worker's truck and drove erratically through the neighborhood near 111th Ave. and Durango.

"I seen him going all over the street.  I'm surprised he didn't kill no one on the street.  I'm very surprised," said Contreras.

Police laid down spike strips, but that didn't stop the joyride.  Bustos drove right through them.

"They had the two driver side tires already flat and he came down the street like a bat out of hell straight at the cops," said Contreras.

Bustos rammed a patrol car at high speed.  The officer on the other side of the vehicle's crushed door was airlifted to a hospital and is expected to be okay.

But the spree didn't stop there.  After Bustos crashed the truck, police say he got out, waving a machete and a pocket knife at officers.

Witnesses say Bustos never backed down.

"I knew he was going to end up getting shot.  That's what he was looking for.  He asked for that.  What else can you do?  They gave him every opportunity to stop," said Contreras.

Glendale police have taken over the investigation.  They have not said why Bustos went on a criminal rampage.

Family members say he was a father and lived with relatives in the neighborhood.

"My uncle was kind, loving.. he loved his family.. he would do anything for us.. he would give you the shirt on his back," said Melissa Bustos.

Police say the Avondale officer remains hospitalized is in serious condition.  His injuries are not life-threatening.
