Officer Raul Garcia with DPS tells Fox 10 a DPS officer was conducting a registration check on a black Volkswagen Jetta going northbound on Interstate 17 near Greenway around 9:00 p.m. Friday, when the officer discovered that the license plate was reported stolen. The officer then attempted to pull the car over, but the driver sped up and exited I-17.
Officers soon located the vehicle near 23rd Avenue and Paradise Lane and began searching for the driver. Another DPS officer was searching the neighborhood on foot when a man lunged out from some bushes and tried several times to tackle the officer. That man was later identified as 32-year-old Barry Hassell, according to Garcia.
The officer fended off the assault and Hassell ran away.
Three DPS officers caught up with Hassell one block away and gave him arrest commands. Hassell hid his hands from officers so the officers tased him in order to take him into custody, Garcia said.
During a search of the area, officers found a loaded hand gun inside a backpack that was found in the bushes where Hassell was hiding, according to Garcia.
Hassell was transported to a hospital where he was treated and released for a respiratory-related issue. He was then booked into the Maricopa County Jail for aggravated assault, felony flight, theft of means of transportation, theft and an outstanding $1 million warrant out of Superior Court.
