Ducey appoints new head of Department of Child Safety

"There is nothing more important than the safety of Arizona's children," said Greg McKay, the new head of the Department of Child Safety.

Governor Ducey appointed a new team to the run Arizona's DCS.

"You've got a new governor who wants to go in a new direction, but the direction is around the safety of our children," said Governor Doug Ducey..

Greg McKay is a former Phoenix Police Detective and he will run DCS. He's been running the child welfare investigations office sine 2012. He's also credited with discovering over 6,000 child abuse reports that were closed without investigation back in 2013. That discovery led to the overhaul of the Child Protective Services and the formation of the DCS.

"I've seen firsthand the tragic conditions that not oo many of our most vulnerable children have to suffer in, my intention and promise is to protect as many of those children as possible," said McKay.

McKay has almost 20 years of experience in child safety and law enforcement.

"As far as understanding how to conduct investigations, it's going to be one of our focuses absolutely in getting people trained in how to uniformly investigate these cases so we can ensure these children are safe where we leave them," he said.

Vicki Mayo, a long time child advocate will serve as Deputy Director. The goal is an agency that is better at protecting Arizona's children.

"Our objective is an agency most concerned with protecting children, not with protecting itself," said Ducey.
