Family of 4 safe after home bursts into flames

A fire broke out in a Phoenix home, and the family made it out alive.

Phoenix Fire crews extinguished the blaze at 15th Avenue and Dobbins early Tuesday morning.

"The silver lining is that the family had a working smoke alarm, they heard the alarm go off, and they already had a plan," said Captain Aaron Ernsberger, with Phoenix Fire.

The father suffered minor burns on his foot from trying to put out the fire after he escaped with his wife, and their two young sons, ages 1 and 3.

It's good they made it out quickly because the flames were intense and ready to spread. "They had a heavy fire load, high heat, low visibility, they made entry and extinguished the fire. It wasn't cooperating as well because it had a good head of steam on us," said Capt. Ernsberger.

Crews put the fire out, protecting the homes around it which were at risk.

The Phoenix Fire Department is working to try and find a place to stay for the family. Investigators are working to determine the cause.
