Family of 5 safe after daughter smells smoke in home

A family of five was forced out of their home overnight after a fire broke out near 40th Street and Oak.

Firefighters say a 12-year-old girl was still awake while the rest of the family was sleeping.

She smelled smoke just after midnight and woke up the rest of her family.

It's not known how the fire started, but the flames managed to spread into the attic.

Crews were able to contain the blaze and keep it from spreading to the rest of the house.

Firefighters estimate they were able to save 80 percent of the home and most of the family's property.

The family told firefighters that their smoke alarms were never activated.

Crews worked with the family to find them a place to stay overnight.
