Family of murdered man speaks out, hopes to raise money for proper funeral

Today, the family of a man murdered in a stabbing this week is speaking out. The suspect in the murder is the same man who police say stabbed a Phoenix police officer earlier this week.

The suspects name isn't being released at this time, but the victim's family tells me they are relieved the man will now face murder charges and they are thanking the Phoenix officer who risked his life to catch the suspect.
Rachel Vasquez spent the day washing car after car, hoping her efforts help raise enough money to give her brother a proper funeral.

"He was a really good brother," Vasquez said. "He had a really good heart and he didn't deserve this."

Tuesday night, 29-year-old Gabriel Jesse Stevens, was stabbed to death at an apartment complex near 17th Street and Adams.

"He was trying to help a friend fix a vehicle, and he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Vasquez.

The day after the murder, a Phoenix police officer responded to a call about a couple fighting near 16th Street and Van Buren. Police say the man dragged the woman into the street and then stabbed her and the responding officer.

The officer eventually shot the suspect, the man police say is the same man who stabbed Stevens the night before.

The police officer, the woman, and the suspect are all now recovering. Police say he will face murder charges as soon as he is out of the hospital.

"I'm just glad he was caught," Vasquez said. "Even though they didn't know it was him from the incident before, but I'm just really glad he is behind bars and he's going to be putting a lot of time in there…and thank you for catching him."
Stevens leaves behind a 6-year-old daughter. His family, shattered their loved one is gone, is now trying to give him the final farewell he deserves.

"Every family has their ups and downs, but he really was a good person with a good heart."

The family has set up a Go-Fund-Me account to help raise money for funeral expenses. If you would like to donate to that account, visit
