Gilbert dog deaths: Maricopa County Attorney explains why meeting was canceled

Protesters were upset last week after the Maricopa County Attorney canceled a private meeting with the owners of dogs who died at the Green Acre Boarding Facility last summer.

Bill Montgomery is now speaking out about why he canceled the meeting, and he didn't hold back.

The owners were expecting to meet with Montgomery to discuss his decision to drop animal cruelty charges against the four people; the owners and caretakers of the facility.

One of the caretakers is the son of Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, but Montgomery says his decision was not politically motivated.

"This is just an effort to further their civil suit and identify deep pockets," said Bill Montgomery. The county attorney is not mincing words. "I'm not going to contribute to the kind of hysteria."

He was blunt while explaining why he canceled a private meeting with the owners of the dogs who died at Green Acre. Montgomery said he had several meetings with the owners but is now tired of seeing information from those private conversations posted on social media.

"They're parading children in front of cameras with framed pictures of their pets, I don't see that in gruesome criminal cases," he said.

Montgomery said he dropped charges because he believed the case needed more investigation and wanted to send it back to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office before the court reached the same decision.

"If my goal was to pander to a particular group of people, or pander to a particular group of victims, it would be very easy to sit back and let a court tell us what to do," he said.

The attorney for the dog owners John Schill released a statement:

"My clients are extremely upset by the County Attorney's Comments. They are the victims and should be treated accordingly. My clients feel all defendants are culpable, and the case should be re-submitted to the grand jury."

Montgomery's office has not given any timeline as to when they will make a decision.
