Hiker talks to FOX 10 about harrowing experience on Mt. Everest

A valley woman was on Mt. Everest when a deadly earthquake and avalanche took place.

It took her several weeks to get home, but she arrived on Tuesday and spoke with FOX 10 about the harrowing experience.

Haley Ercanbrack can count herself as one of the lucky ones.  She was just outside of the base camp when the massive avalanche slammed into the camp, killing many people she had just spent weeks with.  She says her mission now is to give back to the people of Nepal.

Ercanbrack is now back in Scottsdale.  She was on her way up Mt. Everest when the devastating avalanche took out the base camp.

"Next thing I know.. avalanche coming from Everest from Noospie...and at that point I'm like, life over.. I'm going to be buried alive right here," she said.

The avalanche at the base camp killed at least 17 and injured dozens of others.  Ercanbrack and her climbing expedition had just left the base camp three days before.

"If my team and I would have been at base camp.. our camp was in a bad place when the avalanche came down, we probably all would have been killed."

Her team climbed down from camp two when they got to the base camp, they saw the devastation, bodies and the injured.  She says it was unrecognizable.

"We are hearing that our camp that we were at for two weeks that's supposed to be a safe haven has been destroyed and I couldn't believe it until I saw it."

After several days on Everest, rationing food and supplies, a helicopter rescue eventually got Ercanbrack and her team out.  Then she saw Katmandu destroyed.

She went to Nepal to climb Everest, but says she returned with a new goal: to help the people of Nepal.

"The people of Nepal need help and the damage has been done.. we can't go back in time.. what we can do now is help the people of Nepal."

Ercanbrack is encouraging people to donate to Nepal relief efforts and says in the next few weeks, she will be fundraising for those earthquake victims.
