Hundreds turn out for the Phoenix Heart Walk and festival

Fox 10's Ron Hoon took part in an event near and dear to his heart...and all of ours.

Thousands of walkers from around the valley met in downtown Phoenix to raise money to combat heart disease. The 5K Phoenix Heart Walk kicked off this morning at the Wesley Bolin Plaza; and nearly 300 community and business teams made up of people walking in tribute of someone took part in the event.

"It's really become kind of a family tradition, especially those community teams," said Cayci Oliver with the American Heart Association. "... It's something that their family and friends...they do consistently; and afterwards, the do family reunions or picnics nearby. And it's really become a tradition with those people."

Oliver says they raised a record-breaking 1.3 million dollars today. The walk was followed by a heart healthy festival with giveaways, a live band and plenty of kids' activities. And, it was emceed by our very own Ron Hoon.
