It's been more than three years since Jhessye disappeared, and on her birthday April 1, she would have been 9-years old.
One of Jhessye's cousins testified Wednesday; she told the jury it was Jhessye's birthday.
For the first time, pictures of the inside of Jerice Hunter's apartment were shown in court.
The photos were taken the day Jhessye was reported missing. They showed Jhessye's bedroom and her backpack.
They also saw photos of the master bedroom closet; it is where police believe Jhessye was held for days without food or water before she died.
In the photos, nothing appears to be out of the ordinary, but police say they later found blood in the closet.
Jhessye's cousin Lisa Vance told the jury that she called Child Protective Services to check on Jhessye a few times. She suspected Jhessye was being abused by her mother.
"Her mouth, it looked like her teeth had been knocked out of her mouth, and her gums were bruised at the bottom, it looks like when a child loses their bottom teeth, when they fall out it looked like she had been hit on her mouth," said Lisa Vance.
During the afternoon break, Jerice Hunter broke down sobbing in court for the first time. She and her attorney were talking and then Hunter started crying loudly. Although it is unclear why she was crying.
The trial is set to continue Thursday.
