Phoenix Fire crews responded to the intersection just after 11:30am after a report that the light rail train crashed into a box truck, causing the vehicle to flip onto its side. The Phoenix Police Department says seven people were injured in the crash, with three taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Two men from the truck were in serious condition as well as a passenger who was on the train.
A spokesperson for Valley Metro says service in central Phoenix has been disrupted, and that light rail passengers are being transported via bus from the site of the crash to light rail stops along the line. Light rail service will continue in Mesa, Tempe and west Phoenix, but service in central Phoenix will be disrupted on Saturday. Since the light rail train was dislodged from the tracks, Central will be shut down in both directions into the evening as crews work to get the train back onto the tracks.
