Man faces charges after MCSO busts alleged cockfighting ring

Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies looked for evidence in a cockfighting and dog fighting ring after executing a search warrant at a home in Buckeye.

Avondale Police originally came to the property near Avondale Blvd. and Southern with the warrant as they were looking for drugs.  What they found were drugs and much more.

Investigators say they also found more than 50 roosters, eight pit bulls and two other small dogs.

MCSO says all of these animals were being used in cockfighting and dog fighting rings.

Sheriff's investigators are now involved in this case are they're looking into animal cruelty charges.

In addition to the animals, deputies say they found syringes, steroids, razors and other evidence pointing to cockfighting and dog fighting activity.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio says the animals they've seen so far appear to be in decent condition.

A veterinarian on site is checking out the dogs.

So far, investigators say they have not found any dead animals on the property.

Arpaio says this is fourth large-scale animal cruelty investigation that his office has begun just this month alone.

"They arrested four people and now during the execution of their search warrant they discovered many animal cruelty situations involving cockfighting. Over 50 of the roosters so far.. we're still counting are involved.. found eight pit bulls that we believe, according to some information we received and the information we obtained regarding the dog fighting that's it's a dog fighting ring also," said the Sheriff.

Manuel Trujillo Garcia faces charges of possession of a dangerous drug for sale, narcotic drug for sale, possession of a weapon by a prohibited person, possession/use of a weapon in a drug offense and possession/use of a dangerous drug, narcotic drug and drug paraphernalia.
Three other people were arrested on drug charges. Their names were not released.

The animal cruelty investigation is still underway.

The Sheriff says all of the dogs will be going to the MASH unit and it's unknown if the roosters will be euthanized.
