MCSO detention officer recovering; underwent reconstructive surgery

It was shocking surveillance video from inside the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office 4th Avenue Jail; an inmate on the attack, assaulting a pair of guards for no apparent reason.

Even after the suspect was Tasered, he continued to pummel on the guards until he was finally subdued by additional officers.

One of the officers was beaten so badly in the attack that he ended up with several broken facial bones.

Detention Officer Scott Beaty underwent surgery to repair damage left behind by the attack. He's been with MCSO for close to 20 years and suffered a brain bleed and several broken bones in his face. Now he is resting at home while he recovers.

"It's a freak occurrence... a few people in the world aren't affected by a Taser. Whether they're on drugs or not, this just happened to be one of those individuals," said MCSO Lt. Brandon Jones.

In the video the suspect continued to swing at officers, Beaty suffered the most serious injuries, taking hit after hit to the head. But despite the injuries, it has not damaged his spirit.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio visited Beaty while he was in the hospital.

"(The Sheriff) visited him Friday prior to his surgery, the Sheriff said he was in high spirits, cracking jokes, apparently he just kept that same mentality through the whole process," said Lt. Jones.

Three other detention officers were also hurt, but not hospitalized.

"They're all recovering, obviously their pride was hit and it's taken a toll on that, they'll recover, they got a large family that is going to help them along the way," he said.

Beaty's family members have set up a fundraising website to help his immediate family with household costs and medical bills.

MCSO officials say Beaty has a long road of recovery ahead of him.

As for the inmate, he's been moved to a higher security area of the psych ward. He was initially jailed on charges of burglary and armed robbery. Now he could face several more charges of aggravated assault.
