Off duty DPS officer shoots and kills two dogs

Two dogs are dead after an off-duty Department of Public Safety officer opened fire.

It happened at a home near Ellsworth and Cloud in Queen Creek.

The officer was trying to get the 80 pound dogs out of his back yard when they came at him.

The officer told detectives that he was worried about his kids coming into contact with the dogs.

Investigators say both dogs did not have any collars or ID tags on.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says their detectives are investigating the shooting.
