Peoria neighborhood wakes up to SWAT team

A SWAT situation unfolded in Peoria this morning, putting a neighborhood on lockdown for several hours.

The incident began around 4:00 a.m. and lasted until just before noon. Police were called out to the area near 87th Avenue and Grand where a man was intoxicated and very upset about a recent death in the family.

He was making suicidal claims and got into a fight with one of his roommates. He even threatened to pull out a weapon, according to police.

The roommates got out of the apartment safely, but the man's young nephew was still inside with him.

"We were able to eventually, finally make contact with the young man, and he came out he was taken into custody without incident, said Lt. Stephen Hadley with the Peoria Police Department.

The SWAT team was able to rescue the toddler before bringing the suspect out. No one was injured during the standoff and the neighborhood and surrounding streets are now back open.
