Pastor John Moriarty, of Redeemed Outreach Center, was known by most as "Pastor Jack." This Youtube video, posted in 2013, shows him talking about the center that helps the homeless, sex offenders and prostitutes get back on their feet.
"One of my favorite things to do is to help people get off the streets, get off of drugs, get off of alcohol."
Police say the pastor and two others were at their home on 20th Avenue and Monroe when two men robbed them around 8:30 p.m. Friday night.
A woman hid and called police while, investigators say, another man in the home was assaulted. Friend Phil Garcia says Pastor Jack was shot and killed. He and other friends prayed outside the home today.
"I don't know why someone would want to do this to such a mighty man of god," said Pastor Phil Garcia, a friend of Pastor Jack. "He was such a faithful servant and all he wanted to do was help people out."
Police say the suspects were described as a white man in his 40's and a black man in his 30's.
"I just pray they seek the lord after this," said Garcia.
After we reported the suspect description, a neighbor came out of his house saying he thought he saw the two men, but he didn't want to be identified.
"[I] seen the guys in the alley, so I walked to the store to attend my business," the man said. "When I came out they were asking for money."
He didn't give them money, but he told police that the two men were drinking in the alley across from the pastor's home around 5:30 p.m. Friday night.
"Did they find anything back there? "No just some beer cans, a hat…[it] might be helpful, who knows," the man said.
Friday's murder happened less than a mile from where Father Kenneth Walker was shot and killed during a robbery last June. A suspect was later arrested in that case.
But still, residents in the area are on high alert.
"I don't come out at night usually," said Frank Varela, a neighbor. "I will not be outside at night. Why? Because of all the gunshots I hear."
Friends are now hoping people remember Pastor Jack for the good he did, not the tragedy surrounding his death.
"Have to have faith in God to understand he's in a better place than here," said Pastor Garcia.
Police aren't saying what exactly was taken from the home. Investigators also got different reports from witnesses about how the suspects fled the scene. Some said by foot while others said they may have left on bikes or by car. If you have any information about this case, please call police.
