Police: Elementary school teacher accused of having sexual relationship with 12-year-old student

A valley elementary school teacher is now behind bars, accused of carrying on a sexual relationship with one of his students, a 12-year-old girl.

Now that girl's father is speaking to FOX 10.

The teacher is facing five felony charges including molestation and sexual conduct with a minor.

The girl's father said he and the girls' mother are devastated, and he says it is going to take a long time for his daughter to heal.

But he's calling her classmates, who alerted others to the inappropriate behavior, heroes.

"You have this anger, the anger towards the perpetrator, and a feeling that you physically want to harm that person. Then there's an anger at least for me towards the school, because you send your child there thinking they're going to be safe," said the father.

Parents at Longview Elementary School learned about the arrest of 27-year-old Kenne Michael Worthen.

Police say Worthen admitted to having sexual contact with the 12-year-old girl while on campus.

A judge denied him bond during his initial appearance.

"Even with having no record or anything?" asked Worthen.

"That's what the Arizona Constitution says," replied the judge.

Investigators say they found online conversations where the teacher told the 6th grader that he's worried she will feel guilty and tell his wife or the police.

Police, teachers, and the girls' father say the classmates who reported it are heroes.

"I honestly couldn't thank them enough for what they've done for my daughter in this case, because who knows how much longer this would have gone on had they not said anything," said the father.

"It's just sickening, every time I think about it," he said.

Police do not believe there are other alleged victims. According to court documents, the teacher and the student communicated via an app on her iPod called "Hangouts."

The 6th grader told police she gave the teacher a fake name, so no one knew who she was talking to online.

The school sent home letters to parents telling them that Worthen is on administrative leave and will not be returning to school.
