He was arrested after leaving his 4-month-old baby home alone -- and the baby's mother was arrested too. Police say that both parents left in frustration after an argument over who should watch the baby.
There was a roommate at home, sleeping upstairs, but the parents never asked the roommate to watch the child, so both Rachelle Semler and Derek Irish are facing child neglect charges.
Semler called police Wednesday afternoon to let them know she feared her boyfriend had left the child alone, and sure enough, he wasn't there.
The baby was not hurt, but was found crying in his car seat.
Irish was arrested Wednesday afternoon at a Chandler bar, not far from the home where he lived with Rachelle Semler. According to the police report, they both left the house separately, leaving the baby alone for 20 to 30 minutes.
"This is a case of two irresponsible adults arguing amongst each other with no regards for an infant who has no control," says Chandler Police Detective Frank Mendoza.
"Very irresponsible of both parents to just get up and walk and leave the baby - it was a power struggle."
"You never want to see a small child in obviously what's probably a somewhat volatile situation, and then that they're left by themselves like that," says neighbor Robin Fox.
Both parents were charged with child neglect. Police say the baby is being cared for by his grandparents.
UPDATE: Per the Chandler Police Department, Semler was placed on a diversion and her charges were ultimately dropped. Irish was set for trial and dismissed on the day of the trial.
