Police search for suspect who allegedly rammed police cruiser

Early this morning, chaos ensued after a man allegedly stole a car and rammed it into a police cruiser several times, forcing officers to fire their weapons. Then, the stolen vehicle went up in flames!  Sunday night, police continued looking for the suspect.

It was a tense early morning in this west phoenix neighborhood. Police searched from the air and on the ground, going door to door, looking for their suspect.

"When I opened the door, the police officer with the machine gun asked me if they could come through and search our backyard," said Glenn Dobbs, a West Phoenix resident. "I told them, of course they could."

"I was terrified, so was his Chihuahua," said Resident Victoria Luczkow. "She was shaking out of her fur, literally."

The pursuit started near 37th Avenue and Thomas Road after a man was allegedly spotted driving a stolen, white pickup truck.

"The truck pulled into [the] driveway and we have no choice at that point," said Officer James Holmes with the Phoenix Police Department. "We turn on our overheads and we try to subdue the suspect. At that point he takes [the] pickup truck, puts it in reverse and rams [the] police vehicle."

Police say the officers, fearing for their life, fired their weapons, but the suspect got away.

You can see major damage to the front of that SUV. Phoenix police say the SUV was rammed three times before the suspect then drove the stolen truck into a tree.

A witness captured cell phone video of the tree catching on fire in the front yard. Phoenix police say officer's immediately evacuated the home.
The commotion jolted many residents from their sleep.

"I was sleeping," said Bill Goodman, another West Phoenix resident. "I heard something loud and then I hear sirens, lots of them like they are chasing somebody."

Neighbors heard gun shots, sirens and a fire all in the early Sunday morning hours. Fortunately no resident was hurt, although the officers involved suffered minor bumps and bruises.

At this time, it's unclear whether the suspect is hurt. Police consider him dangerous and possibly armed and they're asking anyone with information to call 9-1-1 or Silent Witness.
