Police: Shooting suspect tried to run over officer, caused multiple crashes

Nearly two terrifying hours in the east valley came to an end when a truck driven by a suspect who had been shot by police in Tempe crashed into a construction site in Mesa near Country Club Drive and Baseline Road.

Police say he intentionally hit two vehicles with a stolen Dodge pickup late Thursday and early Friday, flipping one of them.

It was a chaotic scene and there were several locations involved.

The first crash took place in Scottsdale Road and Thomas, which resulted in injuries.  Then a pursuit began after another crash near Scottsdale Road and Murray, where a car ended up on it's side and colliding with a car wash in the McKellips area.  That's where an officer attempted to stop the suspect with his weapon, but the truck kept going and the driver attempted to run down the officer.  The officer then opened fire and suspect drove off and headed to the Baseline and Country Club area.

"The suspect.. male driver.. was able to flee the vehicle and run through the neighborhoods to the west. Officers were then involved in this pursuit..set up a perimeter, with the help of Phoenix helicopter, were able to locate the suspect 30 minutes later," said Scottsdale Police Sgt. Ben Hoster.  "The suspect had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and he was taken to a local hospital."

The suspect's name has not been released.

"The pickup that the suspect was driving was a stolen vehicle. It was also learned that DPS officers are investigating three separate hit and run accidents on valley freeways involving the same stolen pickup during that time period. The occupants of the vehicles involved in the Scottsdale accidents received minor injuries and no one was transported to the hospital. No officers were injured.  The investigation is still on-going and it involves five different crime scenes," stated Hoster.

Southbound Country Club Drive was closed at Baseline during the investigation.

The incident marks the 19th shooting by police in the Phoenix area and the 30th statewide this year.

Late Friday afternoon Scottsdale police say the suspect was shot three times, not two, and identified him as a 40-year-old male. The truck, a Dodge Ram, was stolen out of Gilbert.
