The encounter happened at night. After he turned on his flashlight, the South American Goliath Birdeater -- the world's largest spider was seen.
The spider's leg span can reach up to 12 inches. It's body is the size of a large fist. It also has prickly, barbed hairs and 2-inch fangs that it uses as a defense mechanism.
Although the spider's bite is venomous, it's not deadly to humans, but it would still be extremely painful.
