Rand Paul: No time for small talk

I got to meet Senator Rand Paul when he stopped by our station not long ago. He is the first and only politician I have ever met who didn't reach out to shake my hand. Most of them practically grab you. But Rand Paul isn't most politicians. He struck me as a bit ornery, impatient, and highly focused. He's on a different wavelength than every other Republican candidate for president. Paul is a libertarian who wants to shrink the federal government and get it out of your personal life. And while other Republicans pay lip service to this notion, he's really pushing it.

Sen. Paul stopped by to do a network interview from the newsroom and we were able to squeeze in a few questions afterwards. But he was in no mood for chitchat. We got a couple sound bites and he split. We caught up with him again at ASU where he gave a speech before a smallish but devoted following. Sen. Paul's challenge will be whether he can get a broad enough base of support to be a serious contender for President. Maybe he's in the race to push the GOP towards adoption of his principles. If that happens he will have succeeded where his father Ron Paul fell short.
