Students locked on school bus with no A/C; driver placed on leave

A valley father is upset after a school bus driver refused to let his children get off the bus.

Parents showed up at the bus stop to pick up their children, but instead of letting them off the bus, the driver took off and headed back to school.

Apparently it all started with some of the students behaving badly in the back of the us and quickly escalated. Now that bus driver is on leave.

"They're responsible for the lives of all those children on a school bus to get home safely, and he did the exact opposite of that," said Adam Kautman.

When Adam Kautman went to pick his children up at the bus stop yesterday, he couldn't believe what happened.

His 5-year-old daughter and a couple other kids got off the bus, then the driver shut the door and locked it with close to 40 kids still on the bus including Adam's 7-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son. The driver then turned off the air conditioning unit after some kids were misbehaving.

"He was yelling and screaming; he was acting out of control," said Kautman.

Another dad who showed up at the bus stop to pick up his kids tried to take matters into his own hands to get them off the bus.

"There was a dad who was trying to open the door, pry the door open, and this happened for a good five minutes," he said.

That's when Adam said the driver gunned it and took off down the road.

"I had no idea what he was doing, I didn't know if he went crazy, was going to go crash into something, because the way he took off he was speeding you know?" said Kautman.

Adam called 9-1-1 and followed the bus that ended up back at Dysart Elementary School where he says the driver finally opened the door and let the kids off, only after El Mirage Police arrived.

"Even if they're acting bad, you can't keep those kids locked up in a bus with no air conditioning, you can't do that to punish them," he said.

The school district issued the following statement in part; "In response to a concern regarding a bus route from Tuesday, the district is conducting an investigation regarding concerns on the bus route. The bus driver has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is conducted."
