Suspect in McDonald's robbery speaks out

A Valley man accused of robbing a woman outside a Phoenix McDonald's is speaking out from behind bars.

Police say Charles Scaggs stole the woman's purse and knocked over her 3-year-old nephew in the process, now he is taking responsibility for his actions.

"This is the only reason I did this interview, to own up to what I did and to tell her story," said Charles Scaggs.

Scaggs is sitting in a Maricopa County Jail, apologizing for stealing a woman's purse at a McDonald's restaurant.

"Basically I just want to own up to what I did, that's not who I am that day, that wasn't Charles, that was a junkie who was looking to get high," said Scaggs.

Police say he stole the purse from the woman at 35th Avenue and Van Buren. 19-year-old Tyler Salas saw what happened and chased after Scaggs, tackling him to the ground, and taking the purse back.

"He felt like he needed to rob a lady that day, but I wasn't going to let it happen, I was really really mad, I couldn't describe what was going through my head, I just felt like it was the right thing to do," said Tyler Salas.

"It was out of nowhere so to me for him to have done that, it was like I could never thank you enough for what you did," said Salas.

Police eventually caught up to Scaggs and arrested him. That is when he found out the woman's nephew was knocked over during the robbery, and he lost his two front teeth.

"That hurt me the worst, cause I got two boys, and I couldn't imagine something like that happening to them, all I know is whatever comes down on me, I deserve it," said Scaggs.

As for the teen who tackled him, Scaggs says he's not angry.

"The utmost respect to him, utmost respect, he was brave, he did an awesome thing, and he got that lady's purse back," he said.

"All I can say is I'm really truly and deeply apologizing," said Scaggs.

Scaggs says once he gets out of jail he wants to enter a drug treatment program.
