Tempe approves ban on smoking in cars with kids

The City of Tempe Council has approved an ordinance that would ban smoking in a car with a child inside.

The ordinance bans the use of all smoking items, including e-cigarettes in a car with someone under 18 inside.

Police can only issue a citation if there is another reason for the stop, for example speeding.

A $50 fine will be issued for the first offense, and each violation after that will raise to a $100 fine.

"Children are among the most vulnerable in our society, and their health and we-being is incredibly important to me, and to all of us," said Councilmember David Schapira.

The ordinance takes effect in 30 days.
